What’s all this about?” I hear you ask. Well, I started off with the idea of a personal/family (read vanity) page to dump detritus of some of my hobbies. Naturally, I decided to get the domain name “fen.com.au”. When I rang up the relevant domain name company they asked me: “What’s your ABN?” (That’s an Australian Business Number, for those who don’t know.) I said, “Don’t you worry about that, I’m not a business. This is strictly for personal use.” Then they asked, “Is your name Fen?” “No. It’s Dejan Djurdjevic. Some people call me Fen, which is a nickname that Nick Fairclough gave me in school for no particular reason except that he had a weird sense of humour.” “I’m sorry, but your application is denied. You will need an ABN and your business must be called “Fen” or have some close similarity to that word”. “But I’m not a business...” “Sorry, no ABN, no domain name. Goodbye.” Click. After I put the phone down I thought, why the hell don’t I become a business? I’m always doing videos/CDs and other creative “projects” for friends and family — and up till now it’s always been for free [please note this carefully Mr Tax Man]. Whatever else I have done (writing, drawing, music etc.) has, with a few notable exceptions, gone into a bottom drawer on completion. It’s a lot of hard work not to get paid in return, particularly when you’ve already got a full time day job and a family who get pissed off with you working till the wee hours of the night on yet another damn fool “idea”. So I said: “Enough!” Like Paul Newman and his old pal Hotchner (think “Newman’s Own Salad Sauce”), I decided to get out of the basement and onto the streets. However please note that I won’t be donating any proceeds to charity. For those who are interested, I’m a resident of Perth, Western Australia. I’m married to a lovely girl called Maureen and we have a sweet natured, bright little munchkin called Lara who is 4 and a cute newborn girl called Maya. I used to be a lousy waiter and barman, then I became an okay barrister and solicitor, and now I’m an Assistant Parliamentary Counsel (fancy title, but it means I draft legislation for a living). By night I’ve also been a martial artist and teacher for the last 25 years. For those interested in this, more serious, side of me, take a look at www.traditionalfightingarts.com. I have been writing and drawing for as long as I can remember. Then in 2000 I studied sound engineering at SAE College here in Perth and decided to put together a music CD. The history of my “career” in music can be found here. The rest is just me being hyperactive (my friends would say crazy, although I prefer “mildly eccentric”). If you want to engage my services for anything, contact me by email. I have a Paypal account, but I’ll accept money in a suitcase too. Enjoy. And give me some money, dammit.
